Dock Talk

Public·30 members

Finger Delivery - 13 Feb

Starting at 0900 we will have the rest of our new Fingers craned into the water at D jetty in Colwood. While we get the mounting brackets installed on A dock, we're going to store the fingers at D dock and will require a few sets of hands throughout the day as we receive the fingers from the crane at D jetty and then (potentially) tow them across the harbour to secure them in Lang Cove. This doesn't require many more than about 6 people working at a time, but will likely be an all day affair.

BBQ lunch provided to volunteers. Please meet at 0900 on A dock so we can talk ground rules on boat use inside the harbour before we head out.

Please RSVP so we can plan appropriately. It's not likely to be a fast paced day and totally fine if you can only help out…

Help needed on A dock Jan 27 (tomorrow)

Hi everyone, there’s a few last minute things to get done before Thursday when hinges will get installed for the new fingers on A dock. We like any one comfortable with using a grinder to come give us a hand tomorrow after work (4-6pm) with finishing.

Thank you!

A dock

Big things are happening in the next month! We've started to prep A dock for the installation of Fingers and will soon shift them from their storage location in Colwood to Lang Cove for installation.

What this means for you:

  1. The western side of A dock will have work underway sporadically as our rock anchors and brackets are installed. Please don't park any boats there. There will be machinery working on A dock, so be aware that you might not have unfettered access at all times.

  2. While our volunteers did a great job grinding down some metal protrusions today, there is a possibility that anything coming in contact with the west side of A dock could be damaged by either bare concrete or that metal.

  3. For the reasons above, club boats going to/from A dock should be parked on the East side, next to Volovent III (pictured)

  4. Volunteer support will…

GPS/GNSS Position Logging of Docks - some Initial Observations

Anyone interested in viewing the initial data from the GNSS position loggers can head to https://www.2bsailing.ca/cfsa/ (best viewed on a larger screen like a laptop).

We are monitoring the positions of the docks to get an idea of how much movement they have during windy conditions. So far we haven't had any storms matching the one in Nov 2024, so are unable to put an upper bound on the amount of dock movement.

One thing we notice is that the GNSS accuracy drops markedly during solar flare events - distortions of the earth's ionosphere add uncertainty to the signals' timing, and lead to 10+ metre wanderings in the position (we know this from attaching loggers to the rock anchors, which definitely aren't actually moving). Geomagnetic activity is measured with a parameter called Kp and I have recorded this value together with the position data (more details at https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/impacts/space-weather-and-gps-systems). There ar…

Wow, how interesting. Too bad we had solar flare ups.

Wet and wild

Happy holidays everyone! First post and its a wet one! Im at the docks, bailed out 5 and 2 (holy smokes....!) After I run BLUESHIFT a bit ill drive around and look for any big signs of trouble. I had a piece of canvas cover that was a bit loose.

Generators on A dock

Today we could not get the main generator on A dock to stay running - it kept stalling after 15-60 seconds of running. We spent a while troubleshooting and concluded likely the fuel supply is blocked. Checked a few hoses to no avail. The manual says to get it serviced if the fuel filter needs replacement (but we're not certain that's the issue). To compound the problem, someone has borrowed the portable generator (2000W hand-carry model) that usually lives in the generator shed. It's not there, and has been gone for at least a week Whoever has it on their boat, or at home, please bring it back ASAP.

We've located the portable 2kW generator, and it's now sitting in the generator shed. Please, everyone, if you borrow tools/eqpt, then return them when you leave the dock.

Dock cart wheels

There is now a stack of new dock cart wheels on the top shelf in the open shed at the end of the workshop where the chain is (does that area have a specific name?), should any carts need them. I fixed the broken cart at STC.

Thanks Judy! We've been calling that the Generator Shed, but only due to lack of a better name...open to suggestions. There's a cart on B dock whose wheels need some fixing or replacement, so if anyone reading this has the time/inclination they can tackle that.

Fundraising

Looking at the weather tomorrow, being favorable for diving. I will at the club at 0930 to change zincs. Any member who wishes to have their zincs changed please message me, 236-508-6531 and I will put you on the list. This being a fundraiser for Able Sail Victoria I ask that you donate, minimum $75 for two shaft zincs changed, $100 for shaft and propeller zincs.

Where we are scheduling multiple boats and are not getting out of the water between boats you will need to be at your boat to hand us the zincs you require changed.

Waste Management

Hey folks,

someone put two small propane bottles in the garbage on A dock. Propane bottles do not go in the garbage or recycling. Please dispose of them properly - you can take them them Hartland.

Chain Guide First Test

Pulling Chain Through Guide

Here's our first test of the Chain Guide (the prototype revealed at the Volunteer Fair). It went well, and suggested a few changes to the roller and to the chain guide itself. These guides will eventually be used at all locations where the mooring chains are affixed to the docks and spine. One difference between this test and the actual intended use is that the guides will mount directly to the concrete instead of the wood rubrail.

That’s awesome! I foolishly thought you were pulling these up yourselves still! But I’ve still noticed all your collective muscles.

Dock Movement Monitors

Position loggers mounted on posts
Position loggers mounted on posts

We'll be monitoring dock movements over the stormy winter season, using these Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Loggers. You'll see them mounted on posts, with several LEDs blinking merrily. The purpose is to measure how much movement the various docks experience during high winds, to help design the joints between the docks and the spine.

Currently we have deployed a logger at the N and S ends of A dock, and the E and W ends of the Spine. The loggers record data to an accuracy of about +/- 50cm, once per second. They don't transmit any data - just record it on an internal memory card. For more technical details, google the logger "Columbus P-10 Pro"

Please don't disturb the loggers. I'll provide updates of our data as we collect and process it. Thanks!

Here's a look at the first bit of data, during the period 6 - 8 Nov 2025. We had a blow of about 25 kt (based on WeatherUnderground: Constance Cove) on 7 Nov, from the SE. I've overlaid the GNSS positions (black circles) on a satellite GoogleMaps layer. The max range of motion recorded was 7m.

Lots more experimenting and recording to come. Next I'll record at several of the rock anchors, to confirm the magnitude of position drift from the GNSS. We'll also want to record at D dock, and during some stronger winds.

Workshop: list for Broken Tools or Parts Needed

There’s now a sheet on the workshop bulletin board to mark down any workshop tools that need attention or parts / supplies required. We can’t fix ‘em or get new sanding belts if we don’t know about them.

It might even stop the blushes from hearing sailorly language if we’ve run out of drill cutting fluid.

Thank you Judy!

25 Oct plan: remove scrap metal/ debris from spine, load into dump truck at STC. Unload into dumpster on base.

There are two old piling hoops that we unbolted from D dock, still lying on D dock, that can also be disposed of. They were too heavy for Barb & I to haul back to the spine...sorry.

Work Parties

The work party events have been published until the end of November. You should be able to see them here (under events) and in the calendar and Member Home page.
