Environment and Safety

Safety in the Workshops - Members are reminded that power tools and workshop equipment are for the use of authorized club members only. Personal protective equipment: eye protection, hearing protection, work gloves, safety helmets, is available to members and must be used as necessary. CSA approved ladders are available for use on the foreshore and these must be SECURED to boats when used as access ladders. Members are further reminded that extension cords used on the Foreshore must be a minimum of 14AWG and three pronged and in good condition.

Spill Kits - CFB Esquimalt has very kindly provided the club with a significant number of environmental items. The most visible are large plastic spill kit drums. These are located on the main dock. Together with new oil booms and spill pads we are now well equipped to deal with spills should they occur.

Flares and Pyrotechnics, Do’s and Don’ts

  • DO check that you have the required amount of flares on board for the size of your vessel
  • DO check that your flares are in date.
  • DO take overage flares to the nearest RCMP detachment for disposal or contact your local Fire Department for advice.
  • DON’T attempt to touch or move flares that are not in good condition (seeping, swollen, broken) and any other type of explosive such as: detonators, black powder, dynamite or military ordnance. Call your nearest RCMP detachment for help.
  • DON’T put expired flares in with the regular garbage – they are explosives!
  • DON’T dump expired flares overboard – they could be washed ashore and cause injury.
  • DON’T discharge expired flares – it is illegal to send a false distress signal under the Canadian Shipping Act.
